Data Recovery - General Hard Disk Failure

PES Data Recovery Service is able to provide Hard Disk Drive Data Recovery on Parallel IDE (PATA), Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drives.

Below you can find the four major types of hard drive failure. Drives with the following failures can be recovered.

Electronic Failure - Data Recovery

An electronic failure is usually found on the controller board of the actual hard disk drive. Electronic failures can be caused by many different incidents, like power spike or electrical surge. In most cases only the controller board is damaged and the actual data has not suffered any damage and is usually up to 100% recoverable.

Electronic Failure on a controller board usually makes a hard disk drive undetectable by the BIOS. Data Recovery from hard disk drives with this kind of failure involves, in most cases, a change of the controller board.

Mechanical Failure - Data Recovery

Mechanical Failure is usually worse than electronic failure. To recover data from a hard disk drive with mechanical failure is more complicated because in most cases we have to open up the hard disk drive and change parts in it. A mechanical failure quite often leads to a partial or total loss of critical data.

One of the most common mechanical failures is a head crash. A head crash occurs when the read-write heads of the hard disk come into contact, momentarily or continuously, with the platters of the hard disk. In this case using the drive in a normal environment or trying to recover data without contacting a data recovery specialist is fatal, it will destroy all your data and make data recovery impossible.

Head crashes can be caused by a range of reasons including physical shock, dust, dirt, movement of the computer, static electricity, power surges, etc.

Is your hard disk drive making a clicking or crunching noise? It is not necessarily a head crash, the most important thing to do …

1. Power down the drive immediately as further use will make things worse

Firmware Corruption - Data Recovery

Hard disk drive firmware is the information that is used by the computer to interact with hard disk drives. It also includes all the information about the drive and the structure on the platters (bad sectors, etc.) If the firmware on a hard disk drive is corrupt or not readable by the computer, it cannot interact with the hard disk drive. Data recovery from a hard disk drive with an error in the firmware usually involves reprogramming and repairing the firmware.

After the firmware has been repaired, partial recovery or even full recovery of your data is almost always guaranteed.

Logical Errors - Data Recovery

A logical failure is completely different from the other hard disk drive failures because in this case the hard disk drive is working fine, only the data on it is fragmented or corrupt. Logical errors have a wide range of problems – it might be a simple recovery or it can be a complex problem with corrupt file systems or databases.

Warning: Many software manufacturers advertise the use of their product for logical data recovery. If your data is really important for you, we recommend not to use tools like that on your own as it can make the problem worse. Even tools like Microsoft ScanDisk or Chkdsk are not recommended for logical data recovery.
