In most cases only the controller board is damaged and the actual data has not suffered any damage and is usually up to 100% recoverable.

Mechanical Failure - Data Recovery

Mechanical Failure is usually worse than electronic failure. One of the most common mechanical failures is a head crash. A head crash occurs when the read-write heads of the hard disk come into contact, momentarily or continuously, with the platters of the hard disk. Head crashes can be caused by a range of reasons including physical shock, dust, dirt, movement of the computer, static electricity, power surges, etc.

Firmware Corruption - Data Recovery

Hard disk drive firmware is the information that is used by the computer to interact with hard disk drives. It also includes all the information about the drive and the structure on the platters (bad sectors, etc.) If the firmware on a hard disk drive is corrupt or not readable by the computer, it cannot interact with the hard disk drive. Data recovery from a hard disk drive with an error in the firmware usually involves reprogramming and repairing the firmware.

After the firmware has been repaired, partial recovery or even full recovery of your data is almost always guaranteed.

Logical Errors - Data Recovery

A logical failure is completely different from the other hard disk drive failures because in this case the hard disk drive is working fine, only the data on it is fragmented or corrupt. Logical errors have a wide range of problems – it might be a simple recovery or it can be a complex problem with corrupt file systems or databases.

Warning: Many software manufacturers advertise the use of their product for logical data recovery. If your data is really important for you, we recommend not to use tools like that on your own as it can make the problem worse. Even tools like Microsoft ScanDisk or Chkdsk are not recommended for logical data recovery.
